Resicast Churchill Mk IV AVRE Turret and Parts – Conversion for AFV Club Churchill
Apr 27, 2009 at 06:42 PM

Review by Alan McNeilly

Introduction

Like me many were delighted with the announcement from AFV Club of their Churchill AVRE Mk III.  This first 1/35 scale AVRE in plastic, just like the new Mk III Gun Tank is a very welcome addition indeed.

In preparation for the invasion of Europe and as a result of the experience learnt in the failed Dieppe raid, the British realized that in order to facilitate a successful landing on the coast of NWE they would need specialized armour support to help over come the beach obstacles and defenses.  79th Armoured Division was tasked with this responsibility and under command of Major General Percy Hobart developed a range of specialized armoured engineering vehicles to help facilitate this.  Hobart’s Funnies had been born and these vehicles went on to play a key part in both the successful landings and final defeat of Nazi Germany.

By 6th of June sufficient numbers of these Funnies were deployed and ready to assist the landings.  The funnies were based on the converted Mk III and Mk IV Churchill Gun Tank.  The Churchill AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) was a key vehicle within the wide variety of Funnies.  It was armed with a Petard Spigot Mortar, designed to destroy bunkers and blow holes in the sea wall defenses.

BigJon-------This Month's Meet the Modeler
Apr 12, 2009 at 04:35 PM

This month's SMW's Meet the Modeler is Jon Hayward aka "BigJon," a popular SMW member, (#138 to be exact), and frequest poster on numerous forums throughout the site, (proven by Jon's nearly 1,000 posts since his May 2007 sign up date).  Jon brings us a very good MTM read this month and provides a nice assortment of modeling pics, (some dating back to his entry into the modeling world).  It's always refreshing to be able to put a face to the name, and Jon has provided a wonderful picture that shows him posing during his Bovington tank driving day, and in his Albion colors.  So without further ado, ---- sit back,---- relax,--- and enjoy another great SMW Meet the Modeler read, "BigJon".
