CMK 8013
Model 1943 UTZM conversion
Scale 1/48

packageS

By Chad Lebo

This conversion is for the Tamiya 1/48 T34/76 model 1941.
This conversion from CMK makes the Tamiya kit into a later
model 1943 T34/76. The turret is of the hard edged, cast type. It
has the twin turret hatches. One of the hatches is of the
tank commander's vision Cupola. See photo #1.

T34 1

Photos 1, 2, and #3 show the resin parts, and the metal 76mm

barrel. Photo #4 is a closeup of the fuel tank. The fuel
tanks all have "dents" in them. The straps on the fuel
tanks are molded onto them. The straps look okay.

The instructions are a two sided sheet. It comes with a
decal sheet, that has markings for three different choices.
See decal sheet photo.

The markings are for, Kursk 1943,OT34, flamethrower tank,1943, and
a tank that took part in Operation Bagration,1944.

High points.
The resin is of high quality. No warpage, or broken parts at all.
The instruction sheet is of high quality as well.

Low points
No casting surface on the turret. The turret is smooth. It would
be easy to make your own, using sandpaper, or putty of some sort.
The conversion kit does not include the side mounted two man saw
that was common on T34's from 1943 onward.
It also does not include a mount for the headlight, that was mounted on the
left side of the hull, looking at it from the rear.
The instructions tell you to mount all four external fuel tanks. The only
T34 variants I have seen that had four external fuel tanks are the, SU85,
SU100, and SU122.

Some of the later T34 1943 tanks had either two external fuel tanks, one
mounted at the left and right, or three external fuel tanks, one on the
left side, and two mounted on the right, as looking at the tank from the
rear.

Page 32 of Soviet Tanks In Combat 1941-1945,The T28,T34,T34/85,and T44
Medium Tanks from Concord Publications Company shows an OT34 flamethrower tank.
I can only guess that Concord based the markings of the OT34 markings
The photo of the OT34 shows what is missing from the CMK conversion.
For example, the two man saw, the hull side mounted headlight, and the two smoke pot
launchers mounted at the rear of the hull.

Final thought.

CMK makes a nice conversion kit. But it would have been nice of them to include
what is missing in what I described in the paragraph above.
